We are delighted to welcome Roy Ayers back to The Magnet.  Expect a full live show of the world’s finest Jazz Funk.

As one of the most prolific music producers of his generation, he made his mark on music in the 1970’s as musical genres changed in scope and definition, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock n’ roll, pop and disco each fought for a niche with the public and a new sound was slowly emerging.  The American audiences referred to it as Fusion, the British called it Jazz-Funk. 

Regardless of what you want to call it, Roy Ayers is the undisputed champion of a sound that seemed to draw from his jazz, rhythm and blues, Latin, funk and dance music roots.  Roy Ayers has continued to write, produce and be featured in collaborations with many major artists, and is currently one of the most sampled artists in the music industry, those he’s worked with in one guise or another include, Herbie Hancock, Herbie Mann, Chico Hamilton, Stanley Clarke, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Stevie Wonder, Lonnie Liston Smith, Pharaoh Sanders, Erykah Badu, Guru, A Tribe Called Quest, Puff Daddy, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Brand Nubian, Ruth Joy, Jocelyn Brown, Tupac, The Roots, and the James Taylor Quartet.

Week Nights at the Magnet - Life isn’t all about getting drunk you know...

As you’d expect from a bar that looks like the Magnet, you’ll feel a warm glow as soon as you enter the place. And even if we say so ourselves, there really is no better place in Liverpool to put the world to rights with your friends than in one of the comfy red booths. The music’s always just right and once you’re in your favourite spec, you won’t want to move. So get one of your mates to get the drinks in and settle yourself down for the night. It could be a long one.

With something going on just about every night of the week, it’s worth keeping your eye on the website and the posters and flyers to make sure you don’t miss anything. You’ll witness everything from the Blues to Reggae, Folk to Funk, Psycho-Billy to Jazz and everything in-between. If you look carefully, you’ll see that we hold our very own Shakespeare theatre with poetry nights and readings from local and national authors and performers.

The Go-Go Cage

Q. What is the The Go-Go Cage?

A. It’s a raucous 50’s and 60's style dance and show.  A wild night of live music and ace DJ’s in a rock'n'soul/burlesque/shakedown/stomp fest and it’s held at the Magnet once a month.

Dress Code: Dress to kill!
The Go-Go Cage is your big chance to dress up; the crowd will be dressed to the nines in their best bib n’ tucker.   The look is 50’s movie star/stylised military/psycho rockabilly/20’s  Flapper meets Raiders of the Lost Arc v. The Mummy Returns/Murder on the Orient Express.  Fancy dress always goes down a storm.  So Dress to impress on this night. 

What should I expect?
Non stop live music from Rock n’ Roll to Hill Billy and Rock n’ Jazz, garage punk and 60’s Surf Twang.  Plus - images on the big screen and DJ’s playing all kinds of wild stuff, dance shows, burlesque and gorillas (but without the mist!).

Taking its name from the sleazy Las Vegas strip joint where the Combover Boys had their residency before they were run out of town by mobsters for their salacious life styles and unpaid gambling debts, The Go-Go Cage now enters its seventh year.  These action packed years have brought the Go-Go Cage to the status of legend among those that are ‘in the know’. 

Starting at 9.00pm, it’s one night out that you need to be early; because you won’t want to miss any of the action.  The night is friendly and atmospheric; the stylish 50's decor of the Magnet adding to the authenticity of the night.  You will often witness those dirty, instrumental sleaze assassins Doktor Combover as they bash out tune after tune.  They’ll be joined by lovingly selected bands that’ll keep the heat on till the DJ’s take you on a journey through their astonishing record collections.  You will never, ever be disappointed by the music at the Go-Go Cage.

In the remote chance that the music and your fellow party goers aren’t enough to aerate your brain cells, there will be the spectacle of dancers and burlesque artistes, insane images on the big screen and all manner of miscellaneous mayhem.  See the gallery for photos from the previous Go-Go Cages and feast your eyes.

Summary
Like New England in the fall and Paris in the spring time, everyone should experience the Go-Go Cage at lest once in their lives.  Get yourself down there.

THE SINK CLUB:  Club Soul, Northern Soul & Motown....

The Magnet was formally known as The Sink Club and was Liverpool’s premier soul dance night throughout the 50’s and 60’s.  This great venue will host a revival of those golden times with special nights featuring veteran soul DJ’s and the cream of UK collectors spinning classic soul music from all genres.

The late license can only add to the authentic classic soul club vibe. Bring your shouting shoes!
